Exercise at Body Focus

½ hour or 1 hour sessions

Our Aim
Fitness is not about sporting excellence.  It is the ability to cope with everyday activities and still have enough
energy to meet additional unexpected demands.

The average adult should be able to dig the garden, carry heavy shopping, run for the train or bus without
becoming breathless and exhausted.

Body Types

The desired body shape for women in prehistoric time was well rounded and plump.  This has changed over the years, so that the desirable shape is not attainable by a normal woman.  It is important when looking at models in magazines to remember that they have been worked on by make up artist and stylist to achieve the look. 

Photos are taken at angles and are computer enhanced, plus models may also have had surgery to achieve the desired look.  At the end of the day its our parents that are responsible for the genes we inherit that determine our ultimate body type.  We inherit physical characteristics that lend towards a particular body type of which there are three.

It is important to know that you cannot change your body type, but need to learn to work with what type you have.
The aim is to feel fit and healthy rather than aiming for a particualr weight on the scales.

Ectomporphs         

Tall and thin and have long arms and legs.

They have difficulty gaining weight and muscle.

They tend to have the body type seen in ballet, dancers, models, high jumpers, long distance runners.


Mesomorphs

Muscular, short with stocky arms and legs.

They are strong and gain muscle easy.

They may find it difficult to lose weight, but excel at power sports like soccer, and sprinting events in track and field.

Endomorphs

Shaped like apples or pears and carry more fat.


Sports they excel at include distance swimming, weight lifting.

Blends

In between all the above three are what we call blend of types.

Set Point

Everyone has a set point at which his or her weight is programmed to stay. It is controlled by the hypothalamus. It is programmed to keep us at a certain weight range set by factors inherited by our parents. although it is not possible to change body types, it is possible to change body composition by utilising exercise in the right way. Regular exercise may lower the setpoint toward a more desirable level.
